Second life and refurbishment
Batches without a history.
A repurposed or remanufactured battery is placed on the market as a new battery. The operator who does it takes the manufacturer’s obligations, passport included.
In scope
What the Regulation asks of your sector.
When a battery in scope is repurposed or remanufactured and placed on the EU market from 18 February 2027, it needs its passport, and the operator who did the work carries the obligation. Most batteries arriving in 2027 will have no passport of their own yet.
The passport records what you know, with its source, and what is out of reach, with the reason. A documented unknown beats a guess.
Where the data sit
Who holds what.
The hard point is publishing what you know, with its source, and documenting what is out of reach.
- Original chemistry and origin
- Original carbon footprint
- No duty to answer you
- State of health and tests
- New configuration and rated values
- Chemistry identified
- Publish with sources
- Buyers of second-life systems
- Insurers
- Recyclers and authorities
Who is already moving
The first passports are published.
- 2024 to 2027BeePlanet Factory and the BASE project
The stationary use case of the Horizon Europe project pilots the passport on second-life energy storage.
- Feb. 2026Corvus Energy
Showed in Lille that a passport must be a living asset, updated with operational data over the battery’s life. Second life is where that matters most.
- March 2024Battery Pass consortium
Its value assessment puts second life among the main beneficiaries of the passport.
What changes for you
Three places where the passport counts.
Second life starts with a passport
From 18 February 2027 a repurposed battery in scope is placed on the EU market with its passport.
Systems sold to businesses
Second-life storage is bought by companies with tenders and insurers. Both ask for the passport.
Sources make the difference
With documented sources you can show where every value comes from. That is what a buyer and an insurer read first.
Working back from 18 February 2027
What has to happen, and when.
One to three months from launch to a published passport, and your cell supplier on the critical path, slowed by the year-end break. Prudent assumptions.
- Before 30 November 2026Supplier request sent
Weeks for the answer, before the year-end break and Chinese New Year.
- Before 24 December 2026Compliance work launched
References listed, template filled, first checks passed.
- Early February 2027Passports published
One QR code per battery, on the product and in the documents.
- 18 February 2027The obligation applies
A battery in scope without its passport cannot be placed on the market.
Working back from the deadline with the prudent assumptions of our retroplanning. Fewer references and cooperative suppliers go faster, twelve configurations and silent suppliers go slower.
The platform, for your sector
Create, manage, share.
- One passport per repurposed unitIdentity, new configuration, state of health, chemistry, with the upstream data you could obtain.
- Unknown, with the reasonFields you cannot fill are recorded as such, with the request you made and the answer you got.
- Living dataCycles, remaining capacity and status updated over the second life.
