The EU battery law, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542

What does the EU law say?

One law, one date, and a market that will ask for the passport before any authority does. Here is the situation, the problem it creates, and how we help you solve it.

The situation

From 18 February 2027, no passport, no sale.

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a digital passport for every industrial battery above 2 kWh, light means of transport battery and electric vehicle battery placed on the EU market. Without it, the battery cannot be sold.

The obligation falls on whoever places the battery on the market, not on the cell supplier. And your buyers will ask before the authorities do. The big accounts have already started.

Today

Your buyers are already preparing their own passport

A manufacturer preparing its passport needs its suppliers’ data. If it buys your batteries, it will ask you. Public buyers must weigh the data under Article 85.

18 Feb 2027

The passport becomes mandatory

Every battery in scope placed on the market carries its QR code and its published page. Penalties are set by each Member State.

Afterwards

The same data serve the next obligations

ESPR product passport, carbon footprint, due diligence. Structured once, reused every time.

The problem

The data exist. Not where the passport needs them.

In your files

Scattered

BOMs, supplier certificates, test reports, spreadsheets, emails. Nobody has read them against the Regulation yet.

At your supplier

Out of your hands

Chemistry, hazardous substances, critical raw materials. Your cell supplier holds them, often in Asia, and its answer takes weeks.

On the clock

Not a spreadsheet job

Some data change battery by battery and over time. Cycles, remaining capacity, status. They do not fit in a spreadsheet, and the deadline does not move.

Two-minute check

Are you in scope?

Four questions on your products and your calendar. Immediate answer, no sign-up.

Indicative tool based on Regulation (EU) 2023/1542. Nothing is transmitted, the check runs in your browser.

What must be gathered

71 data points, 32 from day one.

Commission guidance, version 2.0 of 15 August 2026, for an industrial battery above 2 kWh. About fifty for a light means of transport battery.

The 71, by status

71data points
  • 32Mandatory on 18 February 2027.
  • 26Apply in certain cases, depending on chemistry, use and place in the chain.
  • 12Not to be filled or displayed on 18 February 2027. Carbon footprint, recycled content, due diligence, and points reserved for other categories. The fields are ready in the versioned data model.
  • 1Optional.

Of the 32, who holds them

32mandatory
  • 22You already hold them. Datasheets, test reports, declarations, manuals.
  • 5Your cell supplier. Chemistry, hazardous substances, critical raw materials, extinguishing agent, cathode composition.
  • 5Both. Supplier data completed by your own tests or figures.

We can help you do it

Create, manage, share. We set it up with you.

Nothing to install, no one to hire. The platform holds the structure, we bring the method, you bring what you have.

  1. Thirty minutes on one of your batteriesYou see its passport as it would be published, and the list of what is missing.
  2. The supplier request kitWhat to ask your cell supplier, the letter in English and Chinese, a dated log of your requests.
  3. Published, then kept aliveFields, formats and consistency checked at import. When the guidance changes, your passports follow.

Next step

Knowing where you stand takes less time than guessing.

Thirty minutes on your own references. What you hold, what is missing, where to start.
